I work for the CMS experiment (see video below) at CERN. This is one of the detectors along the world’s largest experiment ever built – the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is a particle accelerator that is 13 miles long underneath the Swiss-France border near Geneva, Switzerland. The CMS experiment detects particles that come flying out of the high energy proton collisions.

I look for instances where two photons (particles that carry light) interact in an anomalous way. Observing events with strange interactions of light would be a sign of new, undiscovered physics and could potentially be evidence of extra dimensions in the universe.
